1950’s Photoshoot – Part 2 | Halifax NS Photographer

After the 1950’s photo session we did in the diner (which I posted here yesterday), I couldn’t let this little lady go without getting some pictures of her on her own.  I had purchased the yo-yo quilt at a yard sale to use a photo prop and it, combined with an old book I found and an old-fashioned phone my sister-in-law gave me completed the impromptu look I wanted.  Love the vintage feel of these pictures and this little miss pulls the look off perfectly.

I have done stylized photoshoots with these two for quite a few years now, and it all started on Valentine’s Day when they were four years old.  When we moved six hours away, I didn’t think we’d have many more, but this little lady’s mom brought her girls to come visit us and we decided a photo session had to be a part of our time together.  I was trying to think of a great theme when I drove past a 1950’s diner here in Halifax.  The fantastic staff at The Chicken Burger gave us the go-ahead to shoot, costume pieces were found and our kids jumped into their roles.  I love this kind of work, and I love when it turns out this well.  Also, be on the lookout for tomorrow’s post featuring this little red-haired girl all on her own.

Thanks to The Chicken Burger restaurant and its staff for allowing us to photograph there!

Long-Distance Relationships

It all started with an idea I had for a Valentine’s-themed photo session.  They were friends, they were adorable, and they apparently decided they were going to get married.

The following year, a certain red-haired girl asked when we were doing our Valentine session, “…because we ALWAYS do them.” So along came this.

And then?  We moved away.  And pictures aren’t quite the same this year.  But my boy still talks about his “future wife” and about how they are going to the same college and get married and about how he misses her.  So, this came next.

valentine's storyboardI have it on good authority that, when Chloe saw these, she almost cried.  We miss you, bunches, our favorite red-head.  Pictures this year weren’t the same without you.  Although Sean did find some ways to be silly on his own and with another curly-haired girl (see below), we can’t wait until we can do some more pictures with you.

(…as a side note, I don’t think you have to worry too much about the four-legged girl…)

And Now for Something Completely Different…

I love taking pictures of children.  Someday, I hope to make my living photographing only them.  But every now and then, I pack up my camera and go somewhere and photograph something that has nothing to do with kids.  This was one of those times.  I had just gotten off the ferry in Black’s Harbour, New Brunswick, saw this scene and started shooting.  When a girl in a long black sweater walked past, I asked if she would be willing to walk down by the water and stand with her back to me.  I don’t even know who she is, but I’m thankful for her spirit of adventure – the picture wouldn’t have been the same without her.

Cute Kids, Candy and a Bunch of Balloons

large collageI have a wonderful friend who I will someday hire as the stylist for my photo sessions.  The pictures above are an example of why.  She came to me one day and said she’d love to do a candy-themed photo session with her kids that involved lots of fun and color and balloons.  One giant lollipop, a red petitskirt, some candy-striped leggings and a bag of balloons later, and we were good to go.  This was one photo session where the kids were completely on board.

Last year, I had the idea of photographing these two for a Valentine’s Day themed photo session (click here for the pictures).  Apparently, they had a good time, because just before Valentine’s Day this year, the same little girl asked her mom when I was going to photograph this year’s session, because I ALWAYS do a Valentine’s session with the two of them.  (I suppose when you’re not even six yet, “always” accounts for a lot…)  Because I love to photograph these two and because I really enjoy themed photo shoots, I jumped at the idea, and so did they.  Even though we couldn’t fit the shoot in until after Valentine’s Day, they were ready for balloons and chocolates just the same – especially the chocolates.  And, because I love so many pics I took of these two, this is just part one of the pictures because I’m going to have to post some more.
