A Girl and her Pearls | Halifax NS Child Photographer

While I don’t try every picture in black and white to see how it looks, there are some pictures that definitely lend themselves to that genre.  Once I started editing this portrait session, the dress, the pearls (a gift from her great aunt) and the wing back chair seemed to call for black and white.  I love how it highlights this young lady’s gorgeous eyes (seriously – I can’t say enough about those eyes!) and gives the pictures a timeless feel.  And I also cannot get over how grown up she looks in these pictures.

I grew up with two brothers and now have three boys of my own.  As a result, there is a definite lack of girly giggling, silliness, and cute sassy-ness in my life (I do get little boy sassy-ness, but it’s not nearly as fun).  I get to make up for that lack when I do sessions with girls, though.  These two were all about posing, smiling and having fun with each other. You can easily see in the pictures how much fun they have together.  I’m sure they’re not always like this, but I certainly didn’t see it if they’re not.  And their super-cute sweater dresses?  Well, all I can say is that I hope my boys give me granddaughters someday.  I’m itching to buy some little girl clothes.

…there was a photographer who saw a dress that a little girl received for her birthday.  The dress was gorgeous and the photographer immediately pictured the little girl wearing it for outdoor pictures once the spring came.  The spring did come and the little girl and her dress were both beautiful.  And, she looked so much like a princess from a storybook that the photographer was inspired to do a whole series of pictures featuring children in storybook garb.  So here is the first installment of The Storybook Project, featuring the princess and the dress that provided the inspiration.

A Tough Decision – I Heart Faces

I Heart Faces is having a photography competition for the best face of 2011.  It must be awfully hard for the judges to choose a favorite picture out of all the submissions.  I know this, because I had a ridiculously hard time picking my favorite portrait out of my own pictures.  From the beautiful pictures I have of my own children to the adorable kids that I’ve been privileged to photograph, I had it narrowed down to about 30…or so.  I just kept coming back to this one, though.  While there are others I like just as well, this one reminds me of a porcelain doll.  It was just one of many great shots I got of this spunky little girl.

The Best Shots Aren’t Always Planned

One of the things I’ve learned about photographing children is that I don’t put my camera away until just before I put on my coat to leave.  I was doing a photo session for this family and the little girl was more than ready for her snack.  Sitting down with a mouth full of cookie, her grandmother happened to make her laugh, and I had my camera ready for this fabulous shot – half-chewed cookie and all.

Style and Lollipops

A couple hours at the park with this sister and brother duo resulted in some fun memories for them and for Mom and Dad.  Now, they’ll always remember big sister’s sense of style (I love the fabulous hat) and little brother’s love for treats, not to mention how adorable they are.

Climbin’, and Posin’, and Drivin’ ATVs

When you take trees to climb, a great pair of sunglasses, a dog, an ATV and three great kids and you’ve got a recipe for a fun photo session.  That’s what I had on this particular sunny afternoon.  It was as much of a time to play as it was a time to take pictures.  And that makes some great memories.

I Heart Faces Contest – People’s Choice

I’ve had many people who loved my “Soccer Princess” pictures tell me I should enter them in a contest.  So guess what?  I am.  There’s a People’s Choice category this week at I Heart Faces in which you can enter your favorite photo of the summer and this is definitely one of my favorites.  I love the fact that this situation wasn’t planned.  Since school begins in August here, I came to watch soccer practice and found the princess in question.  She had dressed up for school pictures and refused to change into her soccer clothes for practice.  I may not win, but the picture was too cute not to try.

All Dressed Up

Ever since I met this young lady, I’ve wanted to do her pictures.  She reminds me of a real-life porcelain doll and has a fabulous, precocious personality.  Our session was great and I wish we could have done more.  It’s a good thing I didn’t, though, since I had a hard enough time choosing pictures for my blog as it was.
